There are many advantages and disadvantages of using a bond service. Let us say for an example that someone in your family has been arrested and the bond has been set for thirty thousand dollars. The thirty thousand must be paid before the defendant can be released. Most people can't afford a bond that high, so that is when a Bondsman comes in. They come up with the money to get the person out. They usually charge a ten percent nonrefundable fee.

If you did not use a bail bond agency, you would have to come up with the entire amount yourself. If the defendant does not show up for court or skips bail, you are responsible for the total amount of the bond.
